Receiver and PC Card Coordinate Systems, Codelists, and Configurations created in the field are placed in the receiver's brain (system RAM), not on the PC card. Be sure to use the "7 Transfer..." menu item to put a copy on the PC card and then back that copy up on your computer. Like any electronic recording medium (even good old low-tech field books can be lost or destroyed), the PC card can be subject to data loss. To minimize the possibility, always backup your data files on your computer. Don't go into the field for a week without the ability to back up your data daily. The receiver's brain is not large. It only has 500,000 bits of storage available. Periodically, remove any old files (coordinate systems, codelists, geoid field files) by formatting the system RAM. Use the "4 Utilities..." menu item, then the "2 Format Memory Module" item, and then press the "F5 SYSTM" key and then press "F5 OK". Be sure to transfer any wanted coordinate systems, codelists, configurations, or geoid field files to the PC card before formatting the brain. Transfer these items from the card back into the brain after formatting. Format the PC card in the receiver periodically. At least once a week. Of course, make sure all your jobs and any other important files on the card have been backed up first. Formatting the card will help prevent corrupt files and file allocation table (FAT) problems and assure plenty of room for your new data. Formatting in the receiver also puts the correct directory structure on the card. Use the "4 Utilities..." menu item, then the "2 Format Memory Module" item. Make sure the PC Card is selected as the Device and then press the "F1 CONT" key and then the "F5 OK" key. System 1200 Firmware Update Steps SKI-Pro and Computer When importing raw data into SKI-Pro directly from the PC card (if Windows recognizes that the PC card drive is a removable disk), SKI-Pro will prompt you to back up the data when you hit the CLOSE button. You should go ahead and accept this option unless you have already copied the files to your computer using Windows Explorer or another file manager. If you modify the data, i.e. you correct a site name or an antenna height, you will also be prompted to back up the data when you hit the CLOSE button. Accept this option. The changes will be included in the backed up data. Your orginal file will not change. Geoid field files are only created in SKI-Pro. Even though they are not hard to recreate, you should keep a copy on the computer in addition to putting the file on the PC card for transferring into the receiver's brain (system RAM). Coordinate systems created in the field should be backed up on the computer and if your are using SKI-Pro, they need to be imported into the program. If a coordinate system has been attached to a job, you can import that coordinate system by checking the "Import coordinate system and components" option in the Settings tab of the Assign dialog box. If the coordinate systems have just been transferred from the receiver's brain to the PC card, a file called GPSTRF.DAT will be created. You can either simply copy this file to some directory on your computer to back it up, or you can import the coordinate systems in this file into SKI-Pro by selecting Files of Type to be "Coordinate system information" and then selecting the GPSTRF.DAT file in the Import GPS Raw Data dialog box.
